Programme Director – Human Rights Defenders at Risk Department

Civil rights defenders is an independent expert organisation founded in stockholm in 1982 with the aim of defending human rights, in particular people’s civil and political rights. We also support and empower human rights defenders at risk on four continents. The organisation works in some of the world’s most repressive regions, and collaborates with local partner organisations in order to achieve long-term sustainable change. In addition, civil rights defenders actively takes action for civil and political rights also in sweden. Civil rights defender’s mission is to become a world leading human rights organisation,  thus the organisation is expanding rapidly.

Civil rights defenders has well-known expertise within security and protection for human rights defenders at risk. The human rights defenders at risk department consists of the natalia project, emergency fund and mobile training centre, which are all internationally recognised initiatives. Civil rights defenders is continuously working to advance their work in the area of security and protection of human rights defenders through geographical expansion and new innovative initiatives.

Being the programme director – human rights defenders at risk

As the programme director for human rights defenders at risk department, you will play a central role in further developing these initiatives, and contribute to the expansion of the organisation’s work in new geographical areas. The programme director has the overall responsibility for developing and implementing support to human rights defenders at risk. You have a team of co-workers with expert knowledge within the field of security and protection of human rights defenders and civil society organisations worldwide. This position is responsible for all activities, budget, and staff of the programme. The programme director reports to the coo and is a member of the operative management team.

You are

We believe that you have been working in an international setting and with human rights. You have a considerable understanding of the security and protection challenges that human rights defenders face. You have developed strong leadership skills through significant experience. You are motivated by working with innovation and development.

You have an academic degree, and have excellent written and spoken command of english.
